The Room in the Elephant by Tom Wainwright

Produced by The Sum and the Tobacco Factory Bristol

Directed by Emma Callander

Premiered at Oran Mor Glasgow then went onto the Pleasance Edinburgh Festival, Tobacco Factory Bristol, Arcola London and a UK tour

Banksy wrote ‘this looks a bit like an elephant’ down the side of a water tank in LA. The man living inside the tank was forced out as it was taken away to sell as a work of art. Was it actually Banksy who wrote the phrase? Was the tank actually taken away to sell as art? Who was the man living inside the tank…? And do we really want to hear the truth or do we just want a good story?

“a vital piece of 21st century drama, about who gets to hold the camera and to define what is art; and whose life finally counts.” **** The Scotsman

“a performance so involving that we’re prevented from seeing the subtext until director Emma Callander puts it right in front of us: that we’re once again appreciating an artistic construct in place of real life; that, as Covington says, we want a story, not the truth.” ***** The List
